Badgers prove resilient in the Magaliesburg

This weekend, Stanford Lake College’s junior Adventure Racing Team, ‘The Badgers’, took part in the Red Ants Rumble in the Magaliesberg. The 130km race consisted of mountain biking, trail running, kayaking, orienteering and an obstacle course. The course was designed as a deliberate return to ‘old school’ adventure racing.

The Badgers, consisting of Danica Altenroxel, Marthinus Maritz, Heidi Katzke and Jarryd Gosling, started early on Saturday morning in a huge thunderstorm, making the first mountain biking leg extremely challenging in the mud. They then transitioned below the Magaliesberg range and completed the spectacular running leg along the top ridge of the mountains in under seven hours. After a 13km paddle on Hartbeespoort Dam, the team then rode to the next transition in the gathering dark, where they completed a very challenging night orienteering section in around five hours.

Tired and cold, but still digging deep, they rode back to the finish at van Gaalens Cheese Farm to finish the race in just under 24 hours, and in fourth place in their category.

Well done to the team and SLC extend a big thank you to the parents who acted as the team’s seconds throughout the weekend.
